River channels are modified for the purpose of flood control, land drainage, irrigation, navigation, prevention of erosion, and so on. The purposes of this study are to investigate the change of river length, planform, width and cross section area, to analyze grain size of bottom sediment, change of thalweg, the amount of deposition and erosion in riverbed and the amount of gravel mining, and to verify the causes of riverbed change and geomorphological effects of riverbed change in Yeongsan River. The results of this study are as follows ; 1. Yeongsan River has been changed to artificial river by embanking, straightening, deeping, widening and dam or estuarine barrage. 2. River length is shorten by 15.7km than 1920` as a result of river straightening and embanking. River width is reduced about 800rn from confluence of Yeongam River to Montanjin, but in the narrow section and channelization section, low channel width is enlarged. The area of cross section is reduced in downstream of Montanjin, but a little enlarged in upstream . 3. Grain size of bottom sediment have a tendency to coarse than 1978. It seems that the causes of coarse trend are construction of estuarine barrage, increase of river gradient by river channel change and increase of gravel mining. 4. From River Mouth to confluence of Manbong River, the thalweg show a rising trend, but from confluence of Manbong River to Gangsin Weir, it show a downward tendency. In upstream of Gangsin Weir, it indicate a rising trend. 5. The amount of deposition and erosion in riverbed show a similar tendency to the thalweg. It suppose that the amount of gravel mining account for about a quarter of erosion in riverbed, The gravel mining in riverbed have a great influence on riverbed change. Man-made structures for example estuarine barrage·bank·weir and bridge, artificial meander cutoff, and gravel mining have a great influence on the change of thalweg and trend of riverbed variation. 6. River channelization may have unexpected or undesirable effects in upstream and downstream channel, for example, acceleration of riverbed erosion, destroy of bridge and bank, downstream flooding and biological impacts. To minimize adverse effects of river channelization, it is necessary that the impact analysis according to interdisciplinary approach carry out before design.
