During 1980`s, agricultural land use in Korea has been fundamentally changed with the rapid economic development in this period. With the population outmigration in rural areas which means the decrease of consumption of crops, market has become an important factor in agricultural regions which has been traditionally in self-sufficient conditions. This transformation of characteristics is different from the other countries, in that this has not been resulted from the surplus of crop production, but from the decrease of crop consumption in agricultural regions resulted from outmigration. The main purpose of this study is to regionalize the crop-combination regions of Korea in 1980. Data used are the harvested area of 43 crops in the report of 1980 agricultural census and 181 administrative units, `si` and `gun`, are used for unit area. The necessary computation was conducted at Seoul National University computer center using VAX-780, Fortran language and cluster analysis program package. Crop-combination structure was characterized by locational quotient and its spatial distribution are shown on Fig. 1 - Fig. 7. In the classification procedure, to equal the mean and variance among crops L.Q. index was standardized by rank 1 to 181. By cluster analysis, 181 unit areas are fused to 5 crop-combination types in 7 dimensional space. Their above mean crops and spatial distribution are shown on Fig. 9-10, and labels of each region are as follows, A. Suburban market-oriented crop region B. Paddy rice mixed-farming crop region C. Hilly mountaineous diversified crop region D. Inland special crop region E. Hilly mountaineous dry-field crop region In distribution of agricultural regions, spatial regularity is identified. That is, centering around the metropolitan Seoul area towards the hilly mountaineous area, inland and Daejeon large city along highway, diversifed crop region, special crop region and mixed-farming region are regularly distributed. But around the other large cities -Busan, Daegu and Gwangju-, spatial regularity is not shown except the suburban market-oriented crop region. This shows that urban market has transformed characteristics of agricultural regions from self-sufficient to matket-oriented conditions especially around large cities. And this means that the structure of agricultural region has been changed in relation to Seoul metropolitan area, like urban settlement system during 1970`s. But characteristics of agricultural regions around large cities show that those regional contexts are different from those of the other countries, in that this transformation are on the basis of traditional paddy rice farming.
