Both Jeju-do and Ulleung-do offer the typical volcanic landscapes in Korea. It is so hard to find in the other local regions where volcanic activity had occured from Pliocene to Quaternary that these islands have become significant areas to be studied. Volcanic activites in the two islands turned out different landscapes in it`s own way, which was originated from different eruption types, kinds, period and quantity, of lava. The islands produced by -volcanic activty give us geographic interest as well as scenic beauty. By comparative discription and illumination on the two islands, the writer would like to raise much more interest about tourism thereof. It is belived that volcanic activities in Jeju-do occured from Pliocence. It consists of sedimentary rocks; Seoguipo-formation, Hwasoon and Shinyangri-formation, volcanic rocks; basalt, trachyticandesite and trachyte, pyroclastic materials; erupted through parasitic cone. There had been five times volcanic burst as well as 79 eruptions. In UIleung-do basalt pushed its way at first and tracyte, andesite, andesite outflowed successively. Thus the island is surfaced with tracyte, andesite and tuff. Basalt, pumices, phonolite and basalt alggomerates are rarely found. There has also been five times volcanic activities here. Basalt, trachytic and phonolitic magma eruption produced high volcano, and then after the volcano erupted a secondary cone, Ahl-bong, formed within Caldera. Next time the most of the island was covered with pumice and lapilli, with trachyte and andesitic lava overflowing at last.
