This study was conducted to verify the mediating effect of post-traumatic negative cognitions between perceived social support after bereavement and prolonged grief symptoms, as well as examine whether emotion regulation difficulties are influenced by the moderated mediating effect. A total of 668 adults who have experienced bereavement were analyzed. Both a causal steps approach (Baron & Kenny, 1966) and bootstrapping were used to verify the mediating and moderating effects; SPSS ACRO (Hayes, 2013) was used to verify the moderated mediating effect. Results demonstrated the mediating effect of post-traumatic negative cognitions sub factors (negative beliefs about the world and self-blame) on the relationship between perceived social support and prolonged grief. Emotion dysregulation had a significant moderating effect on the relationship between negative cognitions and prolonged grief. The moderating effect of self-blame and negative beliefs about the world were significant, but not as significant as negative beliefs about the self. Lastly, emotion regulation difficulties’ significant moderated mediating effect of self-blame and negative beliefs about the world on the relationship between perceived social support and prolonged grief was verified. Limitations are discussed.
