This paper attempted to analyze the film Drive My Car (2021), directed by Hamaguchi Ryusuke, focusing on the intersection with Anton Chekhov"s play Uncle Vanya. Specifically, the narrative structure of Drive My Car is based on the coexistence of director Hamaguchi Ryusuke"s narrative and Anton Chekhov"s narrative. points were considered.
Based on these considerations, we also identified the fact that the main characters of the movie, including Gahuku, reflect the characters of Chekhov"s plays in a similar way or in the opposite way. Afterwards, my focus in this thesis was on speech and communication. This is a concept closely related to the directing method of the main character Gafuku in the play and the directing method of director Hamaguchi Ryusuke. In particular, director Hamaguchi Ryusuke makes the actors practice the script while waiting for a moment of miraculous utterance where communication and sympathy between actors and actors, and between the audience and actors occurs. Gahuku"s directing method, which does not require the actors to interpret the lines, is similar to Anton Chekhov"s directing method, who wanted to convey the characters" words as they are.
In addition, in this article, I noted that the main characters of director Anton Chekhov and Hamaguchi Ryusuke all try to leave but come back. This departure and return is a return from death to life, and as director Hamaguchi Ryusuke defined, they are characters who go from loss to regeneration.
What I couldn"t overlook while analyzing the film Drive My Car, directed by Hamaguchi Ryusuke, was the so-called "subtext". The subtext or the subtext, which is often mentioned when talking about the characteristics of Anton Chekhov"s literature, basically emphasizes the psychological aspect, and is intended for smooth mutual communication between the audience, the writer, the actors, and the entire play. Although director Hamaguchi Ryusuke was not described in the script, the use of subtext as a text documenting the histories, psychology, and relationships of the characters seems to have been influenced by Anton Chekhov"s directing method.
