This study explores the conceptual metaphors on Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based medicine as a relatively new form of discourse. Both published interviews with medical or technical professionals who participated in Watson Health and the reports by them were qualitatively analyzed under the framework of the five common conceptual metaphors on medicine (Tajer 2012) and the three on AI (Dippel 2019). The findings illustrated that the following seven conceptual metaphors were in operation: AI AS AN ALIEN (i.e. as THE OTHER), NON-INTELLIGENCE, A TOOL/COLLABORATIVE EXPLORATION (AT WAR or IN A DETECTIVE STORY), ART, EVOLUTION, A DEMOCRACY, and PRIESTHOOD. Among these conceptual metaphors, the first five related to the nebulous while developing identities of Watson as a new member of the biomedical community, and the other two related to what AI did or could do on the sociopolitical or psychosocial dimensions. On the whole, the conceptual metaphors on AI-based medicine was largely inherited from the union of those on biomedicine and those on AI albeit, but not without foci suited to the newly emerging discourse. Suggestions for future AI-based medicine are also discussed.
