Jeremiah 1:4-10 in the Old Testament is foundational texts for the mission of God. In Jeremiah 1:4-10, Yahweh calls the prophet (נָבִיא) Jeremiah. This study of Jeremiah 1:4-10 shows that Jeremiah was chosen, called and sent as the prophet of universal mission, not only for the Israelites, but for other nations. Jeremiah, as well as other prophets, has had both particularity and universality of mission.
This study is going to focus on studying the relationship between the terms (נָבִיא) and ‘the task of mission’. The Noun (נָבִיא), derived from verb (נָבִיא), is the one who is appointed under the inspiration of God. And the prophet (נָבִיא) is entrusted with God’s authority. He delivers and proclaims God’s message, and teaches God’s will to people on behalf of God.
This study demonstrates that the prophet (נָבִיא) have the identical universal mission first in election, calling and sending, second in the identity of God’s servant, and third in commission. God’s election of the prophet (נָבִיא) is for calling; calling them is for sending; sending them is for mission. They have a missionary task for both Israel and all nations. But their mission has possessed both particularism and universalism or particularity and universality from the beginning. The Triune God has sent them for the salvation of all nations. Sending is for another election. The triune God desires everyone to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth (1 Tim 2:4). For this, God, the Holy Spirit, is seeking other faithful servants now.
