The Purpose of this paper is to analyze the absurdity of slavery and the freedom of black women through the concept of pataphysics in Octavia E. Butler"s Kindred. Butler uses time travel that connects the past and the present to focus on blood ties and criticize unending slavery. Dana, a black woman, faces the painful reality of slavery through the movement of space and time. In this paper, as this historical slave narrative is rewritten by time travel, the violent nature of actual history is starkly exposed in the pataphysics world. Pataphysics is a methodology that interprets irrational situations, and although logical interpretation is impossible, it is a concept that refers to the situations that actually occur. The pataphysics world of Kindred is a mixture of past and present, beyond the limits of current physical space and time. Dana can meet her own kindred here and have the experience of truly understanding them. To sum up, in order to reveal the absurdity and contradiction of slavery in the past, Butler brings Dana, who lives in the present, back to the past and experiences slavery first-hand, showing how important it is to properly inform future generations of the truth of history and gain freedom.
