This paper examines the changes in the description of the ‘Jeam-ri(提岩里) Massacre’ in the middle and high school national history textbooks from the syllabus to the 6th curriculum after liberation. This is because, just as Yu Gwan-Sun(柳寬順) is recognized by the people as a symbol of the March 1st Movement, the ‘Jeam-ri Massacre’ is thought to be recognized as a symbol representing the brutal suppression and massacre of the Japanese Empire against the March 1s tMovement.
It can be easily guessed that the national history education in schools is behind the establishment of the public awareness of the ‘Jeam-ri Massacre.’ Therefore, the primary goal of this paper is to reveal from what perspective this incident has been described by the national history education in schools after liberation. And the secondary goal of this paper is to check the perspectives and attitudes of successive governments toward national history education by deeply studying the educational policy that led to such a description through this work.
Through this paper, it could be confirmed that the description of the ‘Jeam-ri Massacre’ in Syllabus and the 1st Curriculum was relied on memory or was a one-sided argument from the independence movement side. This can be understood in part in terms of the cleaning up of Japanese imperialism and restoration of national identity immediately after liberation, but as a result, it can be attributed to the lack of research on the independence movement including this case. The description from the 2nd curriculum started to be based on the curriculum and academic research rather than the existing description and since the curriculum ultimately describes the educational goals the government is aiming for, the government’s influence on textbook descriptions is also strengthened. Thus, after this period, the description of this case was strengthened or weakened according to the government’s position. In particular, these descriptions continued even after the Japanese imperial history distortion incident in 1982 and therefore, it could be confirmed that the descriptions of the historical meaning of this event was weakened and changed to a description that emphasized only the historical facts.
In the process of writing this paper, it is regrettable that the data of the Ministry of Education was not properly organized, so it is not possible to grasp the national history education policies of the previous governments more closely, but, however, it can be said that it is clear that efforts were made to collect and utilize the remaining data as much as possible. It is hoped that this can be supplemented through the discovery of future data.
