The purpose of this study was to examine the difference in exercise motivation of Korean college students based on gender and grade. The short version of the EMI-2 scale was utilized which is composed of the five factors including psychological motivation, interpersonal motivation, health-related motivation, physical management motivation, and fitness strength motivation. Winsteps 5.2.1 and SPSS 27 programs were used to analyze the data and alpha level was set at 0.05. The results were as follows. First, male students" psychological exercise motivation was positively and significantly higher than that of female students. For both male and female students, the psychological exercise motivation increased positively as the grade increased. Second, the interaction between gender and grade significantly affected the interpersonal relationships factor of exercise motivation. In the case of male students, the motivation to exercise for interpersonal relationships was the highest in seniors, whereas the female students had the highest motivation in sophomores. Third, the interaction between gender and grade significantly influenced on health-related exercise motivation. In the case of male students, the motivation to exercise for health benefits was the highest in juniors while the female students had the highest motivation in seniors. Fourth, the physical management factor of exercise motivation was significantly higher in female students than in male students. In particular, the motivation to exercise for physical management was significantly higher in seniors than in freshmen. Last, the exercise motivation for improving fitness strength was significantly higher in male students than in female students. Both male and female students were motivated to exercise to improve their fitness strength as their grades increased.
