This paper analyzes the affect of Choson’s (before the liberation of Korea) film and audience in colonial Korea, focusing on the film Sweet Dream (1936). Films in Korea have been used to edify Koreans since their first introduction to the Korean Peninsula for propaganda and enlightenment during the Japanese colonization period. However, when a film is regarded as an affective medium and the audience is assumed to be a subject who actively watches the film, the film can be interpreted differently. This paper analyzes the modern landscapes shown in Sweet Dream and the factors that hinder the audience from being perfectly sutured into the narrative. This analysis takes note of the subversive potential that enables the Korean audience to recognize themselves as economic and sexual subjects in colonial Korea and cause a rupture in the colonization policy.
