This essay is an attempt to pursue a different understanding from this evaluation concerning Luther. In other words, this essay assumes that Luther’s doctrine of justification is too much coloured by word of ‘sola’ and it must therefore be understood by more inclusive perspective. In this process, we can see that Luther’s doctrine of justification has nothing to do with ‘quietist,’ or ‘anti-moralist.’ For this, the present author would first of all like to pay attention to the development of Luther’s concept of faith. Luther’s faith was not fixed or static but developed continuously. His concept of faith which was decorated by the word of ‘sola’ and included a pessimistic tendency concerning human role in justification was also a process in the development, and it developed more comprehensively and more profoundly in his later period. Furthermore, the present author would try to reconstruct the meaning of Luther’s unique word of ‘sola’ by reviewing his concept of faith through the ‘coincidence of opposites.’
