Objective: This study aims to establish a plan to utilize an intelligent computer-based procedure system based on artificial intelligence technology to innovatively improve the level of operation automation in establishing the operation concept of an innovative small module nuclear power plant being developed in Korea.
Background: After the Fukushima nuclear accident, the nuclear industry is trying to secure absolute safety fundamentally through the development of a new nuclear system along with efforts to improve the safety of existing large-scale nuclear power plants. As part of these efforts, the Small Modular Reactors (SMR) are emerging as an alternative to flexible energy sources to achieve carbon neutrality. However, compared to large-scale nuclear power plants that can be mass-produced, there is an urgent need for an alternative to absolute reduction of operation and maintenance costs for the SMR. Recently, NuScale of the US designed a SMR consisting of 12 modules, starting with the active support of the government in 2002, and obtained standard design approval from the US NRC in 2020. In addition, the Idaho National Laboratory began construction of a demonstration reactor to verify the stable operation of the NuScale nuclear power plant. In the case of Korea, the development of a small-scale nuclear power plant for the purpose of small-scale electricity production and seawater desalination was started in 1997, and in 2012, it obtained the domestic standard design approval for the first time among all-in-one reactors in the world. In addition, through joint research with Saudi Arabia, follow-up research is being carried out to further secure safety and economic feasibility. Such a small module reactor means a reactor with an electrical output of less than 300 MWe capable of factory production of the reactor module.
