This study examines the aspect of Influence theory(感化論) as cognitive tradition of novel education, and presents Implications for novel education. The perception that novels can influences changes in people’s thoughts and actions is the cognitive base of research related to novel education. In this study cognition is considered from the perspective of Influence theory(感化論) and it is concluded that it originated from traditions rooted in the pre-modern era. To determine the true nature of Influence theory(感化論), this study reviews materials related to novels such as citicisms or preperances originating from the 16th century which has been deemed bis the period of enlightenment.
According to Influence theory(感化論) during the Chosun(朝鮮) period, people considered “the influence of novels” to mean “the influence of Confucian scriptures” instead. This perception arose due to the perceived similarities between both novels and Confucian scriptures. Moreover, both novels and Confucian scriptures were considered as formal or content aspects, and this perception was reinforced over time. During the 17th century, which is considered a notable period in terms of the history of novels and there cognition of influence theory(感化論), novels similar to Confucian scriptures were published. The cognition of influence theory (感化論) had implications for the base of novel education and the balance of formal or content aspects on the influence of novels, textbook changes for voluntary acceptance, and discussions regarding social influences of reading novels. These traditional discussions can lead to the innovation of novel education that has continuously featured the theme of self-denegation after liberation.
