Korean gangster movies had relished their hay days in early and mid 2000’s. After a few years of downturn since 2007, they has restored their popularity as 〈Nameless Gangster : Rules of Time〉 and 〈New World〉 were released in early 2010’s. The box office hit of 〈Inside Men〉 and 〈The Outlaws〉 in late 2010’s kept this trend.
This study was carried out to find out what the success factors of 〈Nameless Gangster : Rules of Time〉 are and what strategies the movie adopted to be successful.
According to a survey report released from Korean Film Council, movie viewers from 2007 to 2012 considered ‘plots and contents’ first and ‘genre’ second for their movie choice, and it turned out that their favorite genre is ‘action.’
Therefore, it is meaningful to look at 〈Nameless Gangster : Rules of Time〉 in terms of narrative strategies which are ingrained in plots and contents. It is also relevant to look at a ‘gangster movie’ for finding its success factors since it is under the ‘action’ genre. In line with this effort, formula, convention, and icon are cleared defiend as the elements of gangster movies, and the genre’s both genetic factors and liveliness of evolving narrative factors can drive the success factors.
