Lab on a chip technology is expanding into the concept of an organ on a chip (OOC) with the development of cell biology and biocompatible material development. A typical application of OOC technology is new drug development, which can be used at various stages in the development process to develop a new therapeutic agent. For example, it can be used as a model for pharmacokinetic studies, a screening platform for evaluating drug efficacy, and a model system for evaluating side effects and toxicity.
In general, OOC is fabricated using soft lithography, a type of semiconductor processing. The PDMS (Polydimethylsiloxane) elastomer is the most widely used material in research of Lab on a chip technology. PDMS allows for the integration of complex structures by replica molding and plasma activated bonding. However, since the PDMS-based OOC has the problem of drug adsorption and evaporation of reagent in the drug screening process, it is difficult to evaluate the drug efficacy of an accurate concentration of target drug.
