The Korean government is committed to advance the country’s energy transition by increasing the share of renewable electricity to 20% by 2030 and to 30-35% by 2040, by gradually phase-out coal and nuclear from the energy mix. In 2019 about 40% of electricity generated by coal, nuclear and LNG contribute by 26%, and only about 6.5% from renewable sources. Thus, Korea needs effective and valid policies and mechanisms for expansion of renewable energy to achieve assigned goal. This study explores whether people in South Korea are willing to participate in a hypothetical Peer-to-Peer electricity trading system, which allow to private prosumers who consume and produce electricity with small-scale electricity units (below 1 MW), trade electricity surplus with their neighbors or KEPCO. Currently, only businesses with capacity over 1 MW can trade electricity with KEPCO through Power Purchase agreement.
