Biodiesel from microalgal biomass was spotlighted as an ideal and renewable biofuel because of its characteristics. However, the economic feasibility of biodiesel has not competed with current fossil fuels. Also, even more, there has been a movement to ban cars with internal combustion engines all over the world therefore the initial target market, diesel-based transportation will be harshly decreased within 20 years. In this situation, here, feasible and required items for the sustainable algal industry were discussed. Firstly, drop-in algal fuels for specific industries were investigated. After the Paris agreement, most industries are forced to implement CO₂ reduction. However, the aviation and maritime industries require high energy density and reliable fuels for passengers and cargoes, not the forms of electricity-based renewable energy. Therefore, drop-in fuels which were already prepared for those industries would be an ideal option. Also, the CO₂ fixation market was discussed as an ideal target of the algal industry.
