In this work, alkyl ketene dimer (AKD) has been used to improve the water vapor barrier property of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) film. PVA is the most widely used synthetic biodegradable polymer with many advantages, such as non-toxic, chemical resistance, low cost, transparency, good film formation, good oil resistance, and high oxygen barrier property. Therefore, PVA is considered a promising material for biodegradable packaging applications. However, due to the hydrophilic nature of PVA, its poor water vapor barrier property limits the use of PVA in packaging.
