The motion picture was the most important media of mass culture in the japan's colonial rule of korea. the motion picture wears the type of the goods in the capitalist society but the masses in the colonial era escaped the position of the spectator who was the simple onlooker and stood on tiptoe as the subject which could enjoy newly-arrived mass culture. specially in 1920's, as the formative period of mass culture, features like these were clearly perceived, in this paper, I tried to investigate the transitional processes of the masses who made themselves from the onlookers who besieged a motion picture to the subject who controlled the mass culture. the motion picture is not an apparatus which can make it possible for us to consume a visual pleasure but also to experience expectation and frustration, desire and despair simultaneously. it shows well the transitional process which makes mass to cultural subject in the competition between the desire for the cultural enjoyment and the collapsing colonial condition. In this paper, I examined the formation of the subject of the mass culture on the occasion of the youth 'Kim' living in Gyeonji-dong(견지동), Kyungsung(경성), capital of Korea in the colonial era. he was crazy over the movies and mesmerized by them. then he wanted to enjoy them but couldn't but experience the colonial shabbiness. The youth are always who accept the contemporary culture to the utmost. they are the people who break the overground culture and establish a new one. we are afraid of the outrageous and lively youth but the youth of korea in 1920s' didn't show something of the youth in them. the desire of people in the colonial era was conditioned by a physical limit like a movie admission fee, the moral fear of the older generation, ultimately colonial impediment.
