<Abstract> Threshold represented by the Mask: Performance and Representative Form in Nô Lee, Sung-jae Those held at threshold tabooed can get the affirmation of their possible existence through performance. The chaos - which has a different point of view about the world or which is different from the everyday life - is realized in the space of threshold. In that space, the mask plays the essential role. In effect, the mask play help people to overcome psychological insecurity and results in the community's unity. This is a social and cultural meaning of the mask performance. The mask has the both sides of ‘hiding and revealing’ and through this character we can live a new life. Especially, the mask of Nô is very important in this context. This mask is an object made of wood by itself. But it's the key to the threshold, having diverse suggestions. Its though-provoking nature stimulate the actors to express their inner world and to transcend themselves. Especially, infinite expression and middle expression have the purpose to sublate the explicit dichotomy and to tolerate the real world's chaos. Not defining matters clearly and maintaining collective norm are originated from the intention of contributing to current order's stabilization. After all, the social function of Nô and the mask of Nô are to absorb the people's consciousness of threshold into the society.
