The purpose of this article is to analyse the problem of the separated families academically. Another way to view the contemporary history of Korea is to understand it as the history of separated families. While the problem of separated families is a direct result of the Korean War and the division of the peninsula, it also can be viewed as a part of the global Diaspora that began in the 16th century. Although the topic of Korean separated families has been studied from a cultural point of view, it has not yet been studied from an academic approach. In the post-cold war area, we need to find a new definition and approach on separated families. This article is composed as follows. First of all, I examine the realities and problems on the ten occasions of exchange visits of the dispersed families, researching the issues around them. Afterwards, I try to define the concept of separated families because a lot of findings on this theme did not use a definition of the families. I classified and explained five categories by definition. Lastly I propose a way to solve the problems around the separated families.
