This study was carried out to investigate the bioactive effects of ethanol extracts of defatted fly larvae, which was produced from house fly larvae during the biological treatment of chicken droppings. Male rats of 200 g of body weight were assigned to one of five groups, including a control group (no orally administered dose of extract) and treatment groups (orally administered doses of extract at 2.5, 5.0, 7.5, and 10.0 mg/100g of body weight). The extract was administered orally via stomaching tubes for 4 weeks. There were no significant differences in diet intake, body weight gain, diet efficiency, and organ weight among the groups. There were significant decreases in plasma glucose, triacylglycerides, total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, and the atherogenic index in the groups, with increasing doses of the extract, respectively (p<0.05). The mean values of HDL-cholesterol were significantly increased with increasing doses of extract (p<0.05). The plasma IgA of the treatment groups was significantly increased, but the plasma IgE of the treatment groups was significantly decreased, as compared to the control group (p<0.05). The cecal counts of Lacticacidbacteria and Bifidobacteria in the treatment groups were significantly increased as compared to the control group, respectively (p<0.05). These results suggest that the ethanol extract of defatted fly larvae has a bioactive influence on improving plasma lipid metabolism, and may contribute to the activity of the intestinal tract or immune response in animals.
