As the national interests for environment and health increase significantly in accordance with growing income level, the production of environmentally friendly agricultural products are increasing in domestic as well as overseas. Domestic environmentally friendly agricultural products have been showing rapid growth by approximately 90% every year since the late of 1990s but its ratio out of overall market in agricultural products is about to 3.5% as yet. Centering around Europe and North American regions where income level is higher than other parts of the world, organic agricultural production shows continuous growth by approximately 15% every year since early of 1990s. Looking at one of our neighboring countries, China, due to government-driven green food promotion and export strategy, China's export of green foods reached to approximately 1.2 billion US dollars in 2004, and expecially the export of organic foods reached to 230 million US dollars which represents 5.8 times increase over 2003. On the other hand, in the case of Japan, the certification portion for overseas out of total amount of organic agricultural products consumption in 2004 was as high as 90% as an absolute majority proportion. Thus, it is expected that the future increase in China's export of green foods will be a threatening factor for domestic environmentally friendly agriculture whereas Japan's demand increase in organic agricultural products will provide us an opportunity for the expansion of the organic agricultural products to Japanese market.
