The purpose of this research is to provide a list of Chinese characters which are frequently used in word formation. Based upon the current Korean textbooks, this research covers about 3500 Chinese characters selected from a list of about 6,300 words. This research has its distinction from other previous studies in that selection of fundamental Chinese characters are made based on real data, not in random basis. Word formation and usage frequency are two main criteria for selection of Chinese characters in this research. Accordingly, Chinese characters with high frequency, being rich in word formation and used frequently in daily living are examined. This research can make several contributions in that it can be easily applied in Korean language instruction as well as it can be used in preparing for Korean language textbook and test problems.
