The dynamic characteristics of building structures remain constant during elastic range. However, its dynamic properties change after structural elements yielded. In time history analysis the peak values of nonlinear response change momentarily, the dynamic characteristics of building structures is not a unique. It is needed to investigate how the vibration mode shape vary with the degree to which the building structures deform beyond its elastic limit. This paper is discussed on elastic and inelastic vibration mode of a multistory building structures. On converting a MDOF system into an equivalent SDOF model, the displacement shape of a MDOF system is assumed in proportional to the first vibration mode. The objective of this paper is to evaluate appropriateness of method of converting a MDOF system into an equivalent SDOF model using inelastic vibration mode. Comparing the dynamic properties of a SDOF model using elastic mode shape and those using inelastic mode shape calculated by pushover analysis of a multistory building structures, the adequacy and the validity of converting method is verified.The conclusion of this study is following; There is a great difference between the elastic vibration mode and the inelastic vibration mode of a multistorey building structures. A method of converting a multistory building structures into an equivalent SDOF model using the first inelastic mode shape obtained from pushover analysis is valid.
