Abstract The satisfaction of the customers to use the public space of the autonomous ward building was investigated in order to suggest several aspects that should be considered when the public facilities are designed. The results of a survey were summarized as (1) In terms of a layout planning and building form, it was found that the approach of the public facilities increases as bordering road becomes large. It was also investigated that the local citizens are much familiar with the building form by which the characteristics of the region is reflected. (2) The survey of consciousness for the accessability of the autonomous ward building and its publicness shows that in using public traffic, the parking facilities, and well-organized moving line system, the larger utility is, the greater the satisfaction is. (3) The public space of the autonomous ward building such as a planting space and a public service center seems to be somewhat effective. It was however found that the unsatisfaction associated with the use of the facilities like places for children or exercise is widely spread. It is therefore likely that those negative aspects should be considered when the public space of the autonomous ward building is designed. (4) In terms of the scale of the public space, the relatively larger satisfaction compared with that of its utility seems to be due to only concentrate on the appearances of the public space without considering the user-friendly design.
