Walking is a popular exercise for peoples with all ages because no skill is required. Walking movement in sports is performed not only in a forward direction but also in backward direction. The previous research investigated physiological and biomechanical characteristics of backward walking(BW). Therefore, this study was to investigate the muscle activities of rectus femoris, biceps femoris, tibialis anterior, and gastrocnemius in backward walking. Seven subjects performed forward walking(FW) and BW at 4.8km/h using a treadmill. The Noraxon 8 channels EMG system and a video camera were used to get the data. The results indicated that the stride time and absolute time of stance in BW were shorter than in FW. The rectus femoris activated more in BW than in FW. During BW, the rectus femoris activated in stance phase, the gastrocnemius produced the activation in the beginning of the stance phase, and the tibialis anterior increased the activation in the middle and the end of the stance phase. The rectus femoris and gastrocnemius showed activation at 80% of the gait cycle and the biceps femoris activated at 90% of gait cycle during BW. Overall, the muscle activities in BW were different in FW. The rectus femoris in BW activated more than that in FW. This results may enhance the improvement of the rectus femoris for training and rehabilitation. And also this study would give the information about the muscle activation in BW.
