Idiopathic Scoliosis involves a deformation and disorientation of the thoracic cage that accompanies the lateral deviation and rotation of the spinal column. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of ball exercise program in young adults with scoliosis. Thirty students with diagnosed scoliosis enrolled that the College of Rehabilitation Science, Daegu University, and aged from 19 to 26 years volunteered. Thirty students with more than 3° difference using scoliometer were included in ball exercise program. Finger to Floor test was hired for examining trunk flexion using a tape measure and trunk extension was measured the distance from floor to chin during back extension on spine position. And Scoliometer was used for assessing Scoliosis. Measurements were taken twice, before and after ball exercise. Ball exercise was administered by a specialized excercise physiotherapist in a university lab, and consisted of 12 sessions (1 hour per session) over 4 weeks. The mean of trunk flexion increased from 7.83° to 12.4° after ball exercise and the mean of trunk extension also increased from 46.46° to 52.07°. Both trunk range of motion was significantly increased after exercise(trunk flexion : p<.01, trunk extension : p<.05). The degrees of scoliosis measured using Scoliometer were significantly decreased after exercise(p<.01). The results showed the effectiveness of ball exercise on trunk flexibility and trunk deviation. In conclusion, the exercise program used in the study can be suggested for treatment and prevention of scoliosis in young population.
