The purpose of this study examined the relationship between an goal perspective(i.e., task or ego orientation) and the perceived purpose of sport among male and female high school team sports athletes. The subjects were 314(male: 140; female: 174) varsity interscholastic athletic participants from 12 high schools in Seoul City area. They were participating in various sports events such as baseball, volleyball, handball, track and field, tennis, golf, badminton. The subjects's goal orientations (task and ego) in this study were measured by Korean version of the Task and Ego Orientation in Sport Questionnaire(KTEOSQ). The subject's purpose of sport participation was assessed Korean version of the Purpose of Sport Questionnaire(KPSQ). Results indicated that female were significantly higher in task orientation than males, while male were significantly higher in ego orientation than females. The importance placed on skill mastery and personal improvement in sport(task orientation) positively related to the beliefs that sport should teach people to try their best, cooperate, and be good citizens, and help individuals obtain a high status career. Ego orientation was a positive predictor of the view that sport involvement should enhanced one's self-esteem and social status and make people competitive. The results of this study were discussed with cross-cultural perspectives between the east and the west.
