The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of gymnastic ball exercise on strength, recruitment patterns of low back muscle, trunk flexibility and pain in patients with the chronic low back pain. For this study, 16 chronic low back pain patients, those who attended in C hospital, were participated voluntarily. They were divided into two groups; i) Exercise group (n=8, Gym ball exercise), ii) Control group (n=8, free Gymnastics). All subjects completed 4weeks experimental treatments(5day/week, 1hour/day). To measure strengths of trunk flexor and extensor, Biodex system proⅢ(Biodex, U.S.A) was used, and measurement angular velocity was 60°/sec. To measure recruitment patterns of upper and lower paraspinal muscle, 4 channel EMG(LXM3204, Laxtha, Korea) was used. Sit and reach test was used to measure flexibility of trunk and MVAS(Modified Visual Analog pain rating Scale) was used to measure pain level. All tests were accomplished at pre and post experiment. The results of this study are as follows; In upper para-lumbar vertebral muscles, muscle activities of left side were significantly increased in both group(Exercise group 60.92%(pre 51.47±17.55μN, post 82.83±28.58μN) and Control group 25.64%(pre 50.90±12.10μN, post 63.95±14.90μN), p<.05) and those of right side were significantly increased in Exercise group(79.31%(pre 46.84±34.21μN, post 83.99±42.92μN, p<.05) whereas there were no significant differences in lower para-lumbar vertebral muscles. Only strengthening of trunk extensors were significant increased in Exercise group(22.13%(pre 222.37±37.82Nm, post 271.57±47.84Nm), p<.05). There were no significant differences of flexibility and pain level. In conclusion, activities of upper para-lumbar vertebral muscles were may increased by gymnastic ball exercise and result in increasing of muscle strength of trunk extensors.
