This research aimed to systematically offer long-running-easily appliable to school frontlines-,determine its effects on mentally retarded students' basic physical strength and sociality, and help them to form right habits of exercising, stay in shape and improve sociability. The research targeted 18 mentally retarded students(exercise group; n=9, non-exercise group; n=9), and offered the long-running program for some 50 minutes a day four times a week for 16 weeks. The research reached the following conclusion.First, the long-running program had positive effects on improving mentally retarded students' basic physical strength. Between the experimental group and the control group before and after the exercise, there was a statistically significant difference with the experimental group in five categories such as speed, muscular strength in the upper arm, muscular sustaining power, flexibility, cardiovascular endurance, but there was no statistically significant difference in the jump forward which shows the muscular strength in the lower limbs. However, overall, there was a significant difference in most of categories, an improvement in physical strength. This suggests that the long-running improved mentally retarded students' basic physical strength.Second, the long-running program had positive effect on mentally retarded students' social adaptive behavior. Between the experimental group and the control group, there was a statistically significant difference in social adaptive behavior index, indicating an improvement. This result suggests that offering long-running systematically can improve mentally retarded students' social adaptive ability.
