IOC maintains, “We are involved in sports but not politics,” but the statement is only one of goals and does not reflect the truth adequately. The Olympics is so closely tied up with politics and the international political structure does not leave it remaining outside the circle of politics. Therefore, it is natural that many critical views are being raised on the Olympics. These views are generally summarized into two positions but more fundamental problems of the Olympics are excessive commercialism, political affairs, nationalism, etc. Originally sports are for players to do physical exercise through sweating and shouting and for both players and spectators to contribute the development of their communities and, furthermore, for the peace of the world. These meanings support the existence and the sports function of the Olympics. Practically, however, there are not a few elements that damage the assumption. It is when political and economical interests beyond the function of sports are pursued through the Olympics. Problems are divided into internal ones surrounding IOC and external ones surrounding the Olympics but both of them have emerged in situations reflecting the contradictions of the contemporary society. However, it is a hasty conclusion that the Olympics should be denied because of serious and extensive problems surrounding the Olympics. What is required is to acknowledge problems, take appropriate actions against them and make efforts to realize the visions and possibilities of the Olympics.
