The purpose of this research is to investigate how foreigners perceive representative, aspirated, tensed sounds in Korean consonants with Japanese speakers. /ㄱ, ㄷ, ㅂ, ㅈ/ has representative, aspirated, and tensed sounds respectively. For /ㅅ/, it has only representative and tensed sounds. It was investigated that foreigners can discriminate 3 different sounds for each consonants(for /ㅅ/, 2 different sounds) or perceive as other categories. Discrimination and identification tasks were performed. In discrimination task, the performance of discrimination between aspirated and tensed sound was good, but there was significant difficulty in discriminating representative and other categories. The error analysis of identification task showed that the participants perceived representative sounds /ㄱ, ㄷ, ㅂ, ㅈ/ as aspirated sounds /ㅋ, ㅌ, ㅍ, ㅊ/ , aspirated / ㅋ, ㅌ, ㅍ, ㅊ/ and tensed /ㄲ, ㄸ, ㅃ, ㅉ/ as representative /ㄱ, ㄷ, ㅂ, ㅈ/ sounds. For /ㅅ/, most participants perceived tensed sounds as representative sounds. Theses results can be explained from the fact that Japanese voiceless plosives and Korean plosives have different physical characteristics.
