Merce Cunningham has established his own choreographic principles, known as anarchic process, indeterminacy, and chance operation through the long time practice of improvisations and happenings. They have been the core of Merce Cunningham’s modern dance choreography, and also have influenced on post-modern dancers such as Trisha Brown, Steve Paxton, Yvonne Rainer, and Deborah Hay. Following these principles, he has refused any pre-production meeting with a composer, and a lighting designer, and he hasn’t made specific plans in terms of timing and positions of stage space for his dancers. Inevitably, every details of a performance have to be determined at the day of costume rehearsal or performance in order to create many new possibilities as much as possible. Additionally, chance operations incorporate with time, energy, focus, and level to verify the original movement phrase. In this paper, we will try to understand Cunningham’s principles of anarchic process, indeterminacy, and chance operation. Then we will look closely how he has utilized his principles in the certain choreographic processes. Finally we will try to find how the dance students and inexperienced choreographers could apply these principles.
