This study researched traditional wrestling and Japanese wrestling’s origins, match types and histories of tournament. I made a comparative study of problems about traditional wrestling’s match process and management of tournament. For the improvement in ssireum, I proposed an alternative plan to integrate Japanese process with Korean traditional wrestling. There are 4 aspects which are full of suggestions. First of all, Japan has six arenas for the national sport only. So, Japanese can consider sumo a national sport. On the other hand, Korean wrestlers and interested people have wandered over the whole country because there is no arena for ssireum in Korea. Even, they seem to be a circus troupe. Second, sumo’s match is fair with lively tricks and management of tournament through single round system tournaments in 15 days but ssireum tournaments match for 4 days. Accordingly, it causes serious problems: not only someone who is dropped off at an elimination contest cannot watch other good players’ match in case of the best wrestlers’ elimination match but also the best wrestlers are placed in one side. Third, spectators are so excited in sumo because sumo wrestlers’ ceremony and their features are Japanese traditional style based on historically investigated literature. Unlike sumo, ssireum cannot attract spectators its appearances are completely different from historical literature. Lastly, since sumo’s wrestling match is close to the seats for the audience, it can build realism vividly but ssireum’s one is far from the seats.
