The all textbooks for the Korean public schools including elementary, middle and high school have systematically updated since the period of the emperor Kojong in 1895 when the westernized school organization was founded first in terms of the principal of the national education. The western educational paradigm was initially started from this time and it has been revised throughout the U.S. military government (1945-1948) and the instruction syllabus period (1948-1954). Since these periods the public school textbooks have been transformed at seven times again according to each social and instructional transition from the first national education curriculum in 1954, the second one in 1963, the third in 1973, the fourth in 1982, the fifth in 1987, and the sixth in 1992 to the seventh in 1998. The latest version of physical education textbooks have been finally set up with the formation and contents based on these seven national curriculums.The diachronic study on the compilation of textbooks is able to show the overall transition or education tendency and also have the high value on the fact that it can offer the basic resource for the next curriculum. This study is oriented by the bibliography, which is one of the documentary study, and show the diachronic transition of the textbook compilation for the Korean physical education in public schools from the U.S. government to the seventh national curriculum.
