This paper aims at providing a sociocultural and pragmatic account of the reference of the indefinite pronoun nam in Korean.. Socioculturally, the pronoun is claimed to be broadly used to indicate the out-group whose concept goes against that of the in-group in a collectivism-based Korean society. Pragmatically, it has two uses; non-deictic use to refer to any people who do not belong to the in-group, and deictic use to refer to some particular person(s) such as the speaker, the hearer, or a third party. It will be also discussed for what purpose the speaker exploits the pragmatic uses of the indefinite pronoun nam.
