Oksun KangImagination is central to Helen Maria Williams's approach to poetry and to her literary world. Even so, the relationship between the romantic imagination and the notion of divine sensibility has not been given sufficient attention. To be human, for Williams, is to be imaginative and creative. Williams's imagination has a special power that enables the self to escape its own interests, implying a sympathetic feeling throughout her whole poetic career. This paper focuses on Williams's Christian imagination as represented in her selected poems of Poems 1786 and in her Letters Written in France in the Summer 1790. My focus is given to Williams's Christian imagination as related to her aesthetics of sympathy which is a willingness to participate actively in the pain of others. Williams also laid her claim as a feminist power to be moved by painting herself as a revolutionary spectator, and by enunciating her political creed as being “entirely an affair of the heart.” Her Christian imagination is caught from heart to heart, suggesting the superiority of her emotional response and advocating feminine values of political revolution.
