Hemingway's heroes Robert Jordan, Richard Cantwell, Thomas Hudson were deeply related with Heroism. They are unsuccessful heroes, it seems. In these works, their knowledges of the world have been deepened and widened. In For Whom the Bell Tolls, Robert Jordan, Across the River and into the Trees, Richard Cantwell, To Have and Have not, Thomas Hudson, have consolidated the knowledge of war, love, and death. They have tried the various knowledge of love, camaraderie, drinking, courage and evil. They realize that their past were in the death-in-life and achieves the courage of true manhood. They try to enter the life-in-death such as the hard situation of war. They have almost completed Hemingway's heroism after having been purged of all human pride. They have arrived at the stoicism. They have attained the philosophy of undefeated individualism. Robert Jordan, Richard Cantwell, Thomas Hudson, seem to be Hemingway's egoism. Their value system of life is, it seems, Ernest Hemingway's. (Jeonju University)
