This essay aims to bring M. M. Bakhtin’s theory and practice to bear on the fiction of D. H. Lawrence in the hope of enhancing our knowledge and understanding of the world Lawrence produced, focusing on Women in Love. Bakhtin and Lawrence explored the dilemma of man and society, and tried to solve it in the novel. Bakhtin as a theorist found a model of the organic integrity in society, and Lawrence as a novelist embodied it in his novel, Women in Love. They thought all sorts of the dominating ideologies in modern society disturb the vital and desirable relationships between men in society. The alternative they made out through or in the novel is the integrity without merging―losing one’s own identity in the interrelationship. It is the star- equilibrium Lawrence embodied in Birkin and Ursula who maintained their own identities and approached their own Beings, continuing the interaction with others. Lawrence visualized the inner conflicts of his hero and heroine in the interrelationship with other characters. It can be explained by Bakhtin’ internally persuasive discourse. Lawrence’ achievement is that of the real realism in the polyphonic novel.
