The purpose of this paper is to find out a method to apply metaphoric and metonymic theory to the learning of English. A lot of studies have been done on metaphor and metonymy, but not many researches on English language learning in connection with them have been made. Now there are more questions than answers in applying metaphor and metonymy to language learning. Some of the questions are these: Does the general cognitive ability precede the linguistic ability or does the linguistic ability precede or go together with the cognitive ability? What does overextension and underextension mean in a child language learning period? Do the metaphoric and metonymic expressions reveal the innate ability of children or are they haphazard phenomena? This paper tries to answer the questions posed above in light of latest developments in the field. The writer thinks there is a close connection between language learning in general as well as learning English and metaphor/metonymy. With the above assumption, this paper tries to present some examples in which metaphoric/metonymic theory can be applied to English learning and teaching.
