Hyesook Son (Sungkyunkwan U)This paper aims at showing how black South African poetry has devel-oped under the apartheid, focusing on the representative poets, MonganeWally Serote and Makifa Gwala, and their works. Black South Africanpoetry comes to have its own color and character through the literary resis-tance against the exploiting apartheid system, the creative adaptation of thetraditional oral forms, and the diverse experiments of different generations.After Sharperville and Soweto, new forms of artistic creation appearedcharacterized by the public speaker, “I”, the close relationship between thepoet and the audience, and the energetic experiments which combine thetraditional myths and legends, diverse black music, rhythm, dance and per-formance, and multiple tribal languages and dialects with the establishedpoetic form and English. While helping revive and sustain resistance towhite culture, the poet of the black poetry assumes the representative role ofthe community and directly addresses to the black audience, hence the
