Understanding Conrad's ambivalence towards imperialism requires an examination of the Polish colonial history depicted in his novels. Heroes like Kurtz and Jim who pursue their ideals until their perdition symbolize the Polish nation, which established an extreme model of democracy in the age of absolutism and was eventually destroyed by the autocratic imperial powers of Russia and Prussia. The author's conflict between the imperial ideal and the colonial reality as most seriously explored in Heart of Darkness is the confrontation between the Western ideal and the Eastern reality of the Slavonic Poles, who adhere to Western cultural tradition. The recognition of the colonial reality by the imperial idealist Kurtz's last-minute utterance of "the horror" suggests the possible reconciliation between the ideal and the reality through which the Polish nation is conceived.
