This study aims at analyzing the intersection between, or overdetermination of, gender and class in Elizabeth Barrett Browning's verse-novel Aurora Leigh. Although modern feminist critics firmly re-established this long poem, which was very popular in its days, as one of the great canonical works in English literature, the interconnection between gender and class in this controversial poem has not been thoroughly examined by any critics. This paper focuses on the analysis of the relationship between gender, sexuality, and class in Barrett Browning's work in terms of the roles of the major characters and their relationship with each other. The premise is that Barrett Browning provides a strong critique of contemporary society, combining the "Woman Question" with the topical issues of class in mid-Victorian period. The first half of the paper investigates Aurora's growth both as woman and artist in her relationship with Romney and Marian, while the second half primarily deals with Marian, Lady Waldemar, and Romney. The conclusion considers the ramifications of the ending of the poem in relation to the nineteenth-century version of socialist feminism and the thoughts of John Ruskin and William Morris as well.
