This study investigates the actual conditions of grammar education in English reading and analyzes the results. Specifically, our interests are to find how university students put importance on grammar in English reading and how teachers think grammar education in their teaching. To achieve this goal, we survey 160 freshman students in three different universities taking an English reading class as a cultural subject and 27 teachers in each university. We find interesting results on grammar learning and teaching: Students consider grammar as the least important in reading, but they think they need to increase their knowledge on grammar to improve their reading ability. Teachers teach mainly comprehension skills even though they think it is necessary for them to teach English grammar. From the results, we come to the conclusion that teachers need to teach grammar more actively in English reading class.
