The aim of this study is to investigate theatrical character appeared in the rear portion of Seoul shamanic ritual on the basis of field research materials. Among various parts of the rear portion, this study will be focussed on the two sections of “Chisin” 地神 (earth spirit) and “Maengin” 盲人 (blindman). The theatrical character of rear portion includes such features as “Chigu Song” 자구소리 accompnied by tangak 堂樂 rhythmic cycle, special change of roles, opening plot by independant episode, ritual objects, and so on. Witty talks and dramatic techniques are also important elements of communication between shaman and drum player. This kind of theatrical characters may be one of future topics to be studied in comparison with those of other shamanic rituals including Madang ritual 마당굿 of Hwanghae province, Todang ritual 도당굿 of Kyŏnggi province, Ssikkim ritual 씻김굿 of Chindo Island, Pyŏlsin ritual 별신굿 of East Coast, and so on.
