Safe destruction of hazardous materials has become a major concern for environmental protection. Of particular importances are chlorinated hydrocarbons (CHCs), which are major constituents of many industrial hazardous wastes. The thermal decomposition processes like incineration and pyrolysis can affect the total conversion of hazardous organic compounds to safe, innocuous, thermodynamically controlled, end-products, such as carbon dioxide (CO2), water (H2O) and hydrochloric acid (HCl) which maybe easily scrubbed with existing pollution control equipment. Investigation into the thermal decomposition of CHCs has recieved significant attention in recent years. In practice, total conversion to innocuous material is not easily achieved without considerable effort, and with thermal processes of less than optimum design and operating conditions, stable components in the waste feed may not be totally decomposed. It presents a significant concern to the environment. In order to utilize oxidative and pyrolytic processes more effectively, and to better assess the applicability and limitation of thermal processes, the reactions steps for decomposition mechanism, hydrodechlorination, effects of oxygen (O2) and chlorine on combustion and pyrolysis and so on involved in CHCs thermal decomposition must be understood. This paper presented the fundamental and theoretical/parctical aspect of CHCs waste control in oxidative and pyrolytic processes. Also, this work included the discussions of the experimental results about oxidation and pyrolysis of chloroform (CHCl3).
