The objectives of this study have been carried out to investigate the solubilization of excess sludge by simultaneous ultrasonic and alkaline pretreatment and the methane production characteristics of pretreated sludge by specific methanogenic activity test. The excess sludge was collected from thickening tank of S sewage treatment plant in B city, and its concentration was adjusted to 1.0% total solids. In the simultaneous ultrasonic and alkaline pretreatment reactor, agitator was used ensure sufficient mixing of the sludge and mixing speed was maintained at 200 rpm, which dispersed the NaOH and prevented sludge from settling. Adding alkaline (NaOH) concentrations were 40 meq/L. The ultrasound frequency was varied 15, 20, 15 + 20 kHz, respectively. Also, acoustic intensity of ultrasonic was used a maximum 176 W/L. Specific methanogenic activity (SMA) test was assessed with the headspace method. The SCODCr/TCODCr rate of pretreated excess sludge by alkaline (40 meq/L), ultrasonic (15, 20, 15 + 20 kHz) and combined method after reaction time 45 min were showed 30.5, 15.2, 13.9, 17.0, 57.6, 49.6. 64.1%, respectively, In the SMA test results, ultrasound (15, 20, 15 + 20 kHz) with alkaline (40 meq/L) was more effective than other pretreatment methods, and SMA values of pretreated sludge were calculated 0.286, 0.274, 0.298 gCOD-CH4/gVSS/d, respectively. Therefore, The simultaneous ultrasonic and alkaline pretreatment was found to be more effective than dual frequency sonication and alkaline pretreatment alone in the SCOD solubilization rate and specific methane production.
