This paper attempts to explore the basic features of the pyrolysis of PCB(Printed Circuit Board) that is made of epoxy resin and SiO2. About 50% of PCB is accounted for by non-combustible compounds: SiO2. Non-isothermal thermogravimetric analysis(TGA) was introduced to investigate pyrolysis kinetics of PCB. A batch reactor was used to investigate the distribution patterns of pyrolysis by-products of PCB at operating temperatures of 400oC, 500oC and 600oC. Proximate analyses were carried out for PCB and solid by-products. Ultimate analyses were performed for PCB wastes and solid and liquid by-products. The pyrolysis of PCB is likely to be accounted for by a two-stages series reaction model. The first stage is accomplished quickly and over 90% of decomposable compounds is degraded at this stage. At the second stage, thermally stable compounds produced as a result of the first stage reaction would be decomposed very slowly. Solid by-products are responsible for about 65% of pyrolysis by-products, while liquid and gas by-products represent 20 and 15%, respectively. Since the solid by-products are mostly composed of non-combustibles associated with SiO2, their applications might be limited. Liquid by-products exhibit high content of oxygen(16%) and contain the nitrogen of about 1%. The low qualities of pyrolysis by-products may discourage its pyrolysis application. However, other conventional treatment and recycling methods have already turned out to be economically and technically unpractical for PCB. Despite of low qualities of pyrolysis by-products, the pyrolysis of PCB would be regarded as one of the best options.
